(from the dragon cave wiki, with edits and extras by me)
Dragon Cave is a free adoptables site. The premise of DC is that you are a dragon trainer with a seemingly unlimited lifespan who collects dragon eggs and raises them to become adults.
Like many adoptables sites, the dragons are represented by graphics and are not actual living organisms, or even simulations. These graphics consist of sprites: small pixelated images-that "grow" on your scroll (the scroll being a list attributed to your personal account, consisting of your dragons and their statistics). Based on time, clicks, and views, the dragon will hatch and grow into an adult. If certain requirements are not met (x amount of clicks/views) within a set time period, the egg or hatchling will die.
There are many different breeds, or types, of dragons, and collectors are free to collect based on their own preferences. This can include single-breed scrolls, scrolls consisting only of rares or of their favorite breed(s), frozen hatchling "armies" (hordes of hatchlings that will never reach adulthood), or simply users trying to collect all breeds. Several dragons are secret or discontinued, making the game much more interesting for users looking for "complete sets."
"Catching" Dragons?
Players must also catch their own dragons by clicking on available dragon eggs, either from the main cave (index page) or the abandoned page. Eggs obtained from the front page (or "cave") are caveborn; these have no lineage, having come into existence mysteriously. The abandoned page (AP, as it is known to DC users) contains eggs that others have given up in some way. These may or may not have lineage, but it is far more likely to find dragons with parents or even large family lines in the AP.
Due to new updats (eventualy this will need updating when they are not new), the cave is split into "biomes", with each egg assigned a place that it is more likley to appear. You are more likley to find a water dragon egg at the lake than in the forrest. Because they have yet to be released, nobody knows how many Biomes there will be. Rares spawn at every Biome at once. This has no effect on the AP.
"Trading" Dragons?
Origonaly there was no official trade system in place, some users "traded" dragons with one another to help each other obtain a complete set of dragons or to exchange rare breeds . This was a very risky process in which the users must exchange the dragon's four digit code found at the end of the dragon's URL (Example: dragcave.net/view/12aB = 12aB). It is important to note that these codes are case sensitive. After exchanging these codes the users will take turns in abandoning their egg or hatchling while the other attempts to catch it using the loophole URL "dragcave.net/abandoned/code". This is not guaranteed to succeed, as the egg being traded can show up on the AP for any hunters to click. One second of lag can mean the difference between a successful trade and the loss of your dragon.
Nowdays, we have teliport as the offical trading system. It means no more waiting up rediculas hours for a trade, and no more egg theifs sniping your eggs! It does mean that you can only trade one egg from a holiday multiclutch, but that aids others without friends with the older holidays to catch them, even giving users a little chance at a Holly egg.
When it was first preposed, TJ said he would remove AP trading when it was implemented, and would remove it eventualy even if it didnt get released. But still people complained and said it would remove any chance they had at rares, because they would not have the eggs that were being traded to try and snipe. Yes, some people are THAT petty that they complained that they could not steal other peoples eggs any more.
Click Sites and growing dragons
When you first get your egg, you are given exactly 7 days and 30min to get it to hatch. Once it hatches, you have another 7 days and 30 minutes to get it to grow up (although you can freeze it if its clearly gonna die if and wont get enough views to grow up). In order to grow your dragons, you need to put it in click sites and let it gain views, Unique views and Clicks.
-Views
Views denote the overall number of views your egg or dragon has received. This can be misleading as the amount of views you can receive is restricted by the amount of unique views you have. For every unique view your dragon accumulates, it can receive a maximum 15 views. So, if an egg has 10 unique views it can't have more than 150 views. Views, some may argue, are a key decider on when a dragon will hatch or grow up, although no formula has ever been released by Dragcave administration.
Usually, your egg starts cracking at around 150-400 unique views, and continues to crack with more views.
-Unique Views
Unique views are accumulated every time an individual views your eggs. However, unlike views, you can only gain 1 unique view per IP Address. Unique views are important since they decide how high your views count can go. As was stated in the previous section, normal views can be no more than 15 times the number of unique views. One unique view can be gained for each IP-address viewing the dragon per 24 hours.
-Clicks
Clicks, like unique views, can only be given out once per person. A click happens when someone accesses a dragon's statistics page. Clicks are not essential to a dragon's growth, as a dragon can grow without any clicks at all, but the presence of numerous clicks speeds up the growth process. One click is gained when someone clicks the egg, this person must then wait for 24 hours before he/she can give it another click.
-Time
Even though your egg may have plenty of views and has a big hole in it, or your hatchling has plenty of views and has grown wings and has gendered, hatching and maturing times are randomized. Until your dragon reaches its "magic time", it cannot move on to the next stage. This magic time has shifted in the past. It used to be 3.5 days, then it was a random point between 3 and 4 days, individual for every dragon. Currently the magic time for all eggs and hatchlings is below 4 days left.
A dragon that has enough views to do so will hatch/grow up when its counter reaches "3 days 23 hours".
However, if your dragon has reached its "time" but has not yet reached a high enough views/unique views/clicks count, it will not hatch or mature until it does reach said count. If the dragon does not meet the required number of views by the time it reaches 0 days, it will die. This is why eggs and hatchlings with fewer than 3 or 4 days (depending on personal opinion) remaining are considered emergency dragons.
